Is solar worth it in Tamil Nadu? The honest answer
Most solar companies won’t tell you when not to go solar. We will. For most homes with a decent roof and a real electricity bill, yes — it’s worth it in Tamil Nadu. But there are genuine exceptions worth knowing before you spend anything.
The short version: plenty of sun, rising tariffs, and the PM Surya Ghar subsidy lowering the up-front cost. For a home with a reasonable bill and an unshaded roof, solar usually pays for itself within a few years and then delivers largely free power for two decades.
How the saving works: your panels generate through the day and cover what you’d otherwise buy from TANGEDCO. With net metering, the surplus you export is credited against what you draw at night, so you’re billed on the net.
When it’s less worth it: very small bills, heavily shaded roofs, rented homes (the economics and eligibility get complicated), or no usable roof area. In those cases we’ll say so rather than sell you a system that won’t perform. Get a free site survey and we’ll give you your own numbers — and an honest recommendation, even if that’s “not yet”.
